The Washington Huskies secured a commitment from a versatile player from Arlington Texas. Diesel Gordon is a 6-1 skill player on the outside. While Gordon looks to be a dynamic high school reciever he will most likely be developed into a defensive back.
While at first glance with no star rating on the 247 Composite rating he has been scouted by 247 and is listed as a 3-star defensive back with an 86 rating.
For the doubters, we suggest looking deeper at his body of work. Gordon holds three Pac-12 offers from Washington, Utah, and Arizona State.
When two of his offers come from UW and Utah, given both program’s recent track record developing defensive backs, one has to feel that his ceiling is high. His other offer comes from a former NFL defensive back, Herm Edwards, now head coach at Arizona State.
Here is how RealDawg.com’s lead scout Trevor Mueller has evaluated him.
Size: Reportedly, now 6-1 and 175, pounds Gordon is a typical size of a nickel back or outside corner. He has a lean frame giving him to fill out to 190.
Speed: Gordon is quick. He has a fast first step that keeps him hip to hip with any receiver. He will have no problem reacting to quick pass-catchers on quick slant routes.
Strength: For his 175 pound frame Gordon throws his weight around well. He uses his momentum to take down bigger players.
Footwork: His hips are smooth. He changes directions well. His footwork paired with his explosive movements keeps him close to make plays on the ball.
Football IQ: Gordon consistently takes good routes at ball carriers. It’s evident he understands the route tree and eliminates routes to anticipate the coming play.
Scoutlook: It is evident that Diesel Gordon is fundamentally sound. He uses his body well on fades and is patient when waiting to knock the ball away when his head is turned away from the quarterback. As he continues to develop and gets bigger he should be a quality contributor for the program.
