The good vibes continue out on Montlake. In the same week Washington first flipped 5-star Kodi Greene, then saw Husky legends like Michael Penix Jr. return for the spring game, and now earned the commitment from the top player in the state. Derek Colman-Brusa is the top player in Washington for the 2026 recruiting cycle. The Kennedy Catholic product was on the field Friday night to watch his future teammates then Sunday night made his commitment official. Colman-Brusa chose the hometown Dawgs over many offers including Oregon, USC, and Tennessee.
Size: Derek Colman-Brusa is a monster. Standing 6-5 and already weighing 260 has the frame to be a 3-down edge rusher. He is a problem in both the passing and running game. He has the height and weight to set the edge as well as get in the way of passing lanes.
Strength: His explosive movements and violent hands make him impossible to block. He consistently gets his hands on the chest of blockers and simply moves them out of his way.
Speed: There is a reason why he is considered the top prospect in the state. His straight line speed is of any linebacker. He has an explosive first step, but is just fast. He is never out of a play and can track down ballcarriers on the other side of the field.
Scoutlook: Derek Colman-Brusa’s frame cannot be taught. He will be first team “off the bus” when he arrives on campus. When he gets to Washington he will continue to work on more nuanced pass-rushing moves that will be useful when he is more closely matched. His skillset makes him extremely versatile at the next level. He can easily wreck a passing play as much as a TFL on a run play. His physical gifts and frame give him a ceiling that gets his name called in the first two rounds on draft night.
