The Washington Huskies continue their tear on the recruiting trail this week with their fourth commitment of the week. Austin Simmons has flipped his commitment from WSU to Washington to help bolster the thinning tight end room. Simmons will join a room loaded with young talent that has potential to be explosive in the future.
Simmons’ skillset brings a play making ability that could translate to what Jack Westover ended up being for Michael Penix. He is primarily a receiving tight end who sees a lot of snaps split out as a receiver.
Size: Standing 6-5 Simmons has the frame to be a matchup problem with every position in coverage. His 220 pound frame can be developed by the strength staff at Washington to make him more of a force in the blocking game.
Speed: He runs well and is quick to break off a route. He looks like a tall receiver with how he moves on the field.
Hands: His highlight film is littered with contested catches all over the field. He is comfortable catching fades while being draped by defensive backs in coverage and is reliable in traffic.
Scoutlook: Austin Simmons has a very solid foundation to be an impact tight end in the Big 10. His comfort in the passing game is high as he is comfortable breaking off routes as well as moving downfield. Right now in his development he looks like a large receiver that will learn blocking schemes when he gets to college. His upside is becoming a security blanket much like Westover was in his time at Washington. The question will be if he can learn to block as well as Jack did in his time at Washington.
