The stars were out in the much chronicled wild weekend at the University of Washington in the month dubbed No Sleep June by director of player personnel Courtney Morgan. Although offers were sent out all over the country the list of commits are within the recruiting footprint of Chris Petersen. Of Washington’s 11 commits 6 are from California, two are from Texas, and one each from Washington and Colorado.
Jordan Whitney‘s speed is elite. On film, he demonstrates an uncommon burst and blazing speed. Even when players look to have taken the perfect angle to catch him he finds another gear and pulls away. Right now Whitney is listed as a 3-star linebacker but at 6-2 and 205 pounds he could find himself in the new hybrid position known as “Husky”. Out of Pacifica High School in Oxnard, California Whitney appears to be grossly underrated given his explosiveness.
Colorado offensive tackle commit, Zachary Henning is the lowest-rated 3-star player in this class. However, given his size and speed, Mueller sees a high ceiling for the 6-7, 275-pounder. “He’s big and runs well,” Mueller said. “He looks the part of a major college offensive tackle. His frame will easily hold more weight and will be able to go toe to toe with the strong and fast defensive ends in the Pac-12. His fundamentals and ease of lateral movement make him a great prospect to be a multi-year starter.”
Diesel Gordon is solid in coverage. Currently listed as a 3-star cornerback, the Texan is fundamentally sound. He uses his body well on fades and is patient when waiting to knock the ball away when his head is turned away from the quarterback. As he continues to develop and gets bigger this off-season he could become a 4-star defensive back.
Anthony James is relatively new to football, beginning as a freshman in high school. Already, a 4-star defensive lineman, Mueller feels that James’ “explosive movements make him one of the top defensive linemen in his class. He gets to the ball quickly and hits hard. He will see playing time early and projects to be an NFL prospect. Honestly, he looks a lot like ZTF and Kayvon Thibodeaux.”
Vincent Holmes. He looks like a Budda Baker clone. Once no longer splitting time between offense and defense Holmes could end up being the highest-rated player in this class, according to Mueller. Listed as a 4-star athlete, Holmes covers a ton of ground in a short amount of time. He blows up screens and slants with decisive steps. He can cover the entire field on long-developing plays because of how quickly he can move from sideline to sideline. His quickness also makes him a problem for pulling O-linemen on stretch plays. When he steps on campus he will be one of the more explosive defensive backs in the program.
There’s limited film on the latest Washington commit Sua Lefotu. However, he has shined in the camp circuit this spring. We will evaluate him in the coming days, but expect him to be rated 4-stars by the time he signs with Washington.
