Ryan Grubb’s case for the Frank Broyles award

Washington’s offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb was officially nominated for the 2022 Frank Broyles award, which is given every year to the best assistant coach in college football. This marks his second straight nomination, as he was also recognized during the 2021 season at Fresno State, and this year he should be considered one of the favorites to win the award.

During his first year on Montlake, Grubb has overseen one of the biggest offensive turnarounds in college football history. In 2021 under John Donovan, the Huskies averaged just 225 passing yards per game, good for 73rd in the country, and just 100.6 rushing yards per game, good (or bad, but that’s just bad grammar) for 124th in the country. Put those numbers together and you get 325 yards of offense per game, which ranked 115th among the 130 qualifying FBS teams.

Through 10 games in 2022, Grubb has gotten the offense up to 13th in the country, a rise of 102 spots. Rushing numbers are up just 24 yards, to 124.2 yards per game and good for the 101st spot in the country. While that’s not significant, what’s mindblowing is Washington’s meteoric rise in passing numbers. The Huskies currently lead the nation averaging 374 yards per game through the air, 26 yards per game more than Tennessee who currently holds the second spot.

He also deserves a lot of credit for the career year that Michael Penix Jr. is having. One of the biggest questions coming into the season was his health, and partially due to the fact that Grubb, who has nine years under his belt as an offensive line coach, has remade the scheme up front. Penix has only been sacked five times this season, and has rewarded his team with one of the best seasons from a quarterback in Husky history.

In 2021, Washington fans saw how much a bad coach can impact a team, and in 2022, they’re seeing how big of a difference a great coach can make. Grubb is incredibly deserving of the award, and should at the very least be named a finalist.
