Reviewing Kaila’s Keys for Victory over Oregon State

The Washington Huskies started out slowly after the bye week.

Key Number 1: Spread the Wealth Amongst Receivers

Kaila said.  “Washington is going up against one of the better secondaries that they have seen and will see on the season. Oregon State has 14 takeaways on the year so far with 10 interceptions, makes them second best in the Pac-12.”

Kaila nailed Key Number 1.  While she talked about the focus that the Beavers would bring to slowing the Washington passing game.  While Penix threw one interception that was returned for a touchdown, and the wind took away the deep balls, Penix hit 8 receivers.  He targeted Rome Odunze and Ja’Lynn Polk 11 times each, while 9 went the way of Jalen McMillan.

However, the threat that those three receivers presented the Beaver defenders produced some big opportunities Penix spread the wealth, as Olin said to tight end Jack Westover for a wide open touchdown.  However, on UW’s final drive, buried deep in their own end of the field, on 3rd and 5, from the Washington eight, Penix found tight end Devin Culp for an 8-yard completion.  The catch by Culp was the 3rd play of the 18-play drive 92-yard, game-winning drive.

Key Number 2:  Defense Needs to Create Takeaways

Kaila Said:  “The Husky defense only has eight takeaways total on the season, six interceptions and two fumble recoveries off of three forced fumbles.”

Kaila somewhat right on Key Number 2:  In the 60 minutes of actual game time the Washington didn’t produce a single turnover.  However, with 3 seconds left in the game Oregon State snapped the ball for the final play of the game.  After a series of laterals, long after the game clock expired Washington defensive back Kamren Fabiculanan recovered a fumble by Damien Martinez.

Key Number 3:  Shutdown Oregon State’s RB1

Kaila said:  “Oregon State has a couple of solid running backs but the go-to guy is freshman, Damien Martinez. On 79 carries, Martinez has 517 rushing yards, averaging 6.5 yards per carry, five touchdowns, and a long of 50 yards. Martinez constantly gets better as the game progresses as well.”

Kaila Nailed Key Number 3:  While Martinez had 74 yards in the first quarter he had 33 the rest of the way.
