Quick Recap: Huskies Sprint past the Wildcats

Everything clicked for the Washington Huskies in a 44-20 drumming of the Arizona Wildcats

“That’s what Husky football looks like right there,” Washington head coach Jimmy Lake said after the win.

The Huskies (2-0) were not by any means looking ahead to next week’s Apple Cup as they scored early and often. Washington’s scoring rampage begin on a drive that featured a fake punt. Just three plays after UW’s successful fake punt, quarterback Dylan Morris found Puka Nacua over the middle who out ran the the Wildcat defenders for a 65-yard TD.

Washington’s onslaught continued. After a Peyton Henry field goal, Arizona had the ball on their own side of the field already down 10-0. On 3-and-8 from their own 20-yard line Arizona QB Grant Gunnell was sacked by Edefuan Ulofoshio. Gunnell fumbled the ball and senior Josiah Bronson recovered at Arizona’s 9-yard line. Two plays later, running back Sean McGrew scored on a 1-yard TD. The boat race was on for the Huskies.

Although Washington’s ground game sets up their passing game, Washington wasn’t scared to open up the playbook tonight. On a perfect weather night at Husky Stadium quarterback Dylan Morris completed 15-of-25 passes for 230 yards and two touchdowns. The night should’ve been even better for Morris as the Huskies dropped two what would’ve been touchdowns.

Washington in consecutive weeks again rushed for over 200 yards. The Huskies rushed for 239 yards and four touchdowns. Richard Newton led the Huskies with 81 yards rushing that was highlighted by a 54-yard TD run.

But the story of the game really came down to UW’s absolutely dominant performance on defense. The Wildcats managed just 45 yards in the first half. Arizona did score 27 points against UW’s backups in the fourth quarter. But it was truly a dominant night for UW’s defense. Washington had five sacks and harassed Arizona QB Grant Gunnell all night. The Huskies held the Wildcats to just 72 yards rushing.

Sophomore Zion Tupuola-Fetui shined again for the Huskies – finishing with three tackles and two sacks.

Linebacker Edefuan Ulofoshio was impressive as well adding five tackels, one sack, and a forced fumble.

Next Up

As of now Washington is expected to play Washington State in the Apple Cup next Friday in Pullman. But with Covid issues a concern on the WSU side the game isn’t a sure thing. Stay tuned.
