Realdawg Roundtable: Predictions and Thoughts on the Cal Game

It’s Week 2, and we’re joined today with some former Huskies, and also the Realdawg writers to talk about the upcoming game against Cal, and what Washington has to do to get that first Pac-12 W.

Former Husky defensive lineman, Jordan Reffett

This week is a payback game for not only the Husky players, but also the Husky staff. Jacob Eason needs to keep Cal secondary on their toes. Play action, looking off DB’s with his eyes and fitting the ball into tight windows.  Ahmed needs to show up, and show out. Get the tough yards and fall forward.  Get Hunter Bryant and Otton a bunch of throws. Defensively the Huskies have to clean up assignments. Lots of new faces and rotations going on during Eastern Game. Defensive Line has to hit the QB. Less blitzing and more 4 man rush. Defensive ends have to keep contain. Make Cal beat you with the pass, do not let them run the ball. Dawgs win going away in the fourth quarter with a defensive touchdown. 30-10.

Former Husky receiver, Reggie Williams

I think the huskies looked great last week. I think it’ll be a great test. Their coach used to b on our sidelines so there’s familiarity there. But I think we will dominate the bears. 38-14. Eason looked nice and the wide outs and running backs looked sweet — I like that #1,2,8 all them boys looked good out there.

I feel the DAWGS have to come out fast in offense!! It will be a close first half, then the running game will take off we should rush 200 yards offensively, and I see Eason throwing 2 touchdown passes and one interception against a great secondary. Defensively, I see a party at the qb!! Our defense should record another 4 sacks and we need to get three turnovers also! I see a well played game, but the Dawgs win 42 21. Woof!

21-10 UW — I am expecting a defensive battle Saturday when the Huskies take on Cal. The Golden Bears have a talented defense with a lot of experienced players. Their entire starting defense is made up of seniors and juniors. This Cal defense will be right there with UW and Utah for best defense in the pac 12 this year. However their offense will be near the bottom of the Pac 12 this year and will struggle to do much of anything against the Dawgs this weekend. I also think we will see a defensive TD from the Huskies on Saturday Night.

Former Husky tailback and Doak Walker Award winner, Greg Lewis

Huskies showed some offensive rhythm in week one. The play action pass can be a huge weapon if we can establish a strong running game. Having multiple weapons in the passing game helps against a solid California defense. Eason’s ability to take the top off the defense will loosen Cal up a bit. The defensive line played pretty good with all the new faces and lack of experience. I was also encouraged by the linebacker play, especially Manu, Tafisi and Sirmon. Cal’s offense is not dynamic so I think even though we still need to get the front 7 more reps we should be stout enough up front for Cal. Our DB’s are special as usual but need to cause some turnovers. UW gets revenge on Cal and wins 30-17.

Last year was just a weird game that saw Cal’s defense stifle the Husky offense, but that was a different offense behind a different quarterback and, this year, the Huskies are ready to for what Cal brings defensively.  Evan Weaver can flap his gums all day but talking trash when you’re about to go on the road and play in a hostile environment against a Top 25 team is really reckless. Washington has the edge though; offensively they have more talent — while defensively they are similar in terms of the secondary. I believe it will start out tight but Washington and its noisy fanbase will wear the Bears down by the end of the third quarter and the Huskies will win 31-17.
