In somewhat unsurprising news, the Huskies have added depth to the quarterback position. Not just unsurprising because they only had two players at the position on scholarship before now, but because of who they added. Michael Penix Jr. was a standout at Indiana, especially in 2019, when his offensive coordinator and position coach was none other than new Husky head coach, Kalen DeBoer. Before his season was cut short due to injury, Penix completed 68.8% of his passes for 1,394 yards, and threw 10 touchdowns to four interceptions while recording a 157.6 QBR.
This is a great pickup to kick off the transfer portal season for the Huskies, as Penix has the experience to start if he wins the job, and he knows the offense that DeBoer is going to want to run with the Huskies. The biggest benefit that he’ll have at Washington is a major upgrade at the skill positions. Penix didn’t have a supporting cast nearly as talented as the one he’ll be throwing to at Washington, and he’s proven that he can make plays in big moments. One interesting stat about him is that during the 2020 season, he became the first opposing quarterback since Jim Everett in 1985 to throw for 400+ passing yards at Ohio State.
While it might not seem like much, he’s also going to be an excellent mentor for Sam Huard. Left handed quarterbacks are hard to come by, and having two of them in the same system, especially an experienced leader like Penix, will be great for the former five-star recruit. Portal season is just beginning for Husky fans, it’s time to buckle up because there’s more to come…
