Pro Dawgs dominate on Sunday Night Football

The Patriots/Buccaneers game on Sunday Night Football was massive for so many reasons, especially for me as a Patriots fan. And as well as Mac Jones played, and as great of a game as it was, the nation should be talking about the two former Huskies on Tampa Bay’s defensive line. Joe Tryon and Vita Vea dominated the Patriots’ offensive line for most of the night, and Tryon recorded the first two sacks of his young career.

Tryon records the sack here on this play, but as Tryon said in a tweet, this one should belong to Vea. As multiple commentators and podcast voices have said, Vea routinely does things on a game-to-game basis that just don’t seem physically possible from any other defensive tackle in the league. This is one of those plays, and it’s one of the craziest plays I’ve ever seen an interior pass rusher make. Left guard Mike Onwenu is assigned to block Vea on this play, but he gets off the ball so fast that Onwenu isn’t able to get out of his stance quick enough to get in front of him. Vea then bull rushes left tackle Isaiah Wynn, which is the last thing in the world Wynn expects from this play. Tryon loops around on a stunt and gets an easy sack of Jones.

This play was more impressive from Tryon, as he’s able to show off his refined moves and not just his elite athleticism. He counters Wynn’s first punch perfectly, and doesn’t let him get his hands in on his chest. He’s then able to use an excellent swim move to get by Wynn just enough to bring down Jones. Tryon has had a few near-misses on his first career sack over the first three weeks of the season, but he more than made up for that on Sunday night in primetime.

Tampa Bay’s defensive line is going to be a force to be reckoned with for years to come, and these two former Dawgs are going to be a huge part of their future. Ikaika Malloe has the perfect sales technique for any defensive line recruit on the reigning Super Bowl champions. Both are former three-star recruits, developed into first-round picks, and are now starters on one of the best defenses in the NFL.
