Peyton’s Place: Washington’s Kicker Rewrites Husky Record Book

The Peyton Henry Redemption Tour continues at Husky Stadium Saturday night against Colorado.

Kicking a field goal is one of the most difficult jobs in sports, given the amount of variables, just as the Minnesota Vikings’ kicker.  The snap must have a certain speed to it to prevent it from being blocked, and the old “Laces Out”.

Regardless, it’s the kicker’s name that people remember.  Just like Henry in Eugene, Oregon in 2018.  People won’t remember the circumstances of his own team icing him with a curious timeout that night.

He became the Scapegoat that night and the G.O.A.T with back-to-back game winners.  And now he’s not just etched in the lore of the Washington/Oregon rivalry, he’s in the record books.

“People remember the missed field goal in Eugene in 2018,” said RealDawg.com’s Trevor Muller.

The mental discipline of a game game-winner against Oregon wasn’t lost on former Washington All-American, whose scoring record Henry broke.

“You just have to trust your swing,” said Washington kicker from 1983-86, Jeff Jaeger.

Jaeger came through in the clutch against UCLA in his final game at Husky Stadium

“Congrats to him on a great run,” said Jaeger.

Henry was recognized by the Pac-12 Conference as Special Teams Player of the Week.  It was his second consecutive week with a game winning kick over a team from the Beaver state.

Enter the Colorado Buffalo, and an odd sequence to end the first half.

Henry kicked an extra point and a field goal for the record with the kick below.

With 15 seconds remaining in the half Husky running back Wayne Taulapapa scored from 4-yards out.  Henry’s PAT was good.  Colorado fumbled the ensuing kickoff on its own 16 yard line.  After an Michael Penix pass was incomplete to tight end Jack Westover, Henry hit the field goal that gave him 382 career points, passing Jaeger.

Look for updates after the game.
