Petersen Says Huskies Need to Come Back and “Swing Hard” Next Week

Chris Petersen was philosophical about the loss to Oregon today, as he addressed the Husky Media post-game at Eugene. Here’s what he had to say…

On the missed field goal and last play of regulation

“I feel bad for Peyton. That’s a lot of pressure for anyone — let alone a young guy. I wish they didn’t have that many timeouts — but Peyton’s a hard-working guy and he’s made a lot of field goals for us in his short career, and he will be back and he will be better. We thought we might get one more play, and we didn’t quite have the play that we liked. We definitely were within Peyton’s range and he had the wind at his back. So we thought we’d win it right there.”

On the running backs

“We feel good about our running back depth. Those two kids can run hard and make plays and I’m actually glad they got a chance to do something in a meaningful game.”

On the physicality of this game

“We knew it would be a physical game and we knew our guys would give it everything they had. That’s just kind of how it is when you’ve got two good teams squaring off.”

On getting back to work

“We’ve got a tough road here. Everyone in the North’s pretty darn good. These guys will reload. This will fuel our fire and we’ll practice harder and analyze our mistakes and analyze the good things we did and build on those and come out next Saturday swinging hard.”

On Jake Browning

“I thought he played well. That kid’s a tough kid. He’s not going to back down ever. He threw some tough, pin-point balls in there and he stood up in the second half.

On the targeting call on Jaylen Johnson

“It’s a tough one. He’s coming off the edge and the guy turns right back into him. It is what it is and those are the rules.”

On Oregon

“You see it on tape, they’re a good team.”

Injury note:

** On the status of Myles Gaskin and Salvon Ahmed, Petersen said “They’re banged up – that’s football here in game seven.”

** Jaylen Johnson will not be available in the first half next week against Colorado due to the targeting penalty.
