Defensive coordinator and outside linebackers coach, Pete Kwaitkowski took time today to speak with the media about how the coaches and team are coping amid the COVID-19 restrictions.
Coach K admitted that one positive thing that’s come out of this is his “technology skills” have been honed, “That’s a big time positive”, he laughed.
The coaches and players continue to take part in Zoom meetings, “Everyone is at their house but we’re still communicating”, he said.
Kwaitkowski said that they had a meeting this morning with the outside linebackers, and usually the mornings are all about film study, opponent study, and that position meetings take place twice a week.
Coach also commented on his working relationship with Ikaika Malloe, and what Malloe brings to the table now that he’s been promoted to co-coordinator, “He’s been awesome”, Kwaitkowski said, adding that when you “get work with good people it makes it more enjoyable.”
One reporter asked about the develop of Joe Tryon over the years, and Coach K said “it all came back to how he prepares”, noting that Tryon has all the skills and natural talent, but that his attention now to details and commitment makes all the difference.
This is also something that applies to the younger linebackers (inside and outside) that haven’t yet gotten a lot of reps. Coach specifically said he expects this kind of development of Laiatu Latu, “I expect the same growth that Joe’s shown…the game will slow down for him.”
I did talk to Coach about the recruiting pipeline in Texas and will include this information in a separate article.
Tomorrow we’ll be talking to Ikaika Malloe.
