OTD in 2020: Germie Bernard commits to Washington

In the modern age of college football, recruiting is probably the most stressful part of a coach’s job. Selling a player on your school is quite the challenge, especially when you’re competing against a lot of the other top universities across the country for the same goal. Securing a commitment from some of the country’s top players is a tough enough task, but getting them to stay committed after that can be more of a challenge sometimes. Players who stay committed for over a year are a rare breed, and today we’ll pay tribute to four-star receiver Germie Bernard, who is one of those players.

On July 30th, 2020, Bernard announced his commitment to the University of Washington, and hasn’t looked back since. He’s even gone so far as to not take any calls from any other schools, refusing to even inquire with his coach who’s calling, because he doesn’t want to back off his commitment in any way, which is incredibly rare from a high school athlete.

Bernard is one of the top receivers on the west coast, and it’s very clear he was wide receiver coach Junior Adams’ top target on the recruiting trail. Getting him locked up early was very important to the future of the program, especially after the comments Jimmy Lake made during the Pac-12’s media day in Los Angeles.

“I believe our receivers over the years have held us back from winning those NY 6 games. Doesn’t just fall on them, but that position has to be better,” Lake said. One player alone can’t fix the position, but a player of Bernard’s caliber, especially when he’s combined with players like Rome Odunze and Jalen McMillan can be a major boost for an offense.

As the 2022 class continues to play out, remember Bernard’s choice to stay 110% committed to Washington. He’s got all the tools needed to be a star on the field, but his attitude is going to make him a star in the locker room and among Husky fans as well.
