Just win baby! That’s what they used to say, but the human element of college football voting is proving that it might not be enough. What would be enough of a resume? I mean, Washington has beaten No. 6 Oregon, No. 13 Utah, No. 19 Arizona and USC. The first two were at home while the Arizona and USC wins were on the road.
The Huskies sit at 5.
Florida State is also unbeaten and ranked a spot ahead of Washington at number 4. The Seminoles have beaten one ranked team: 7-3 LSU who sit at 15 in both polls.
Ahead of them are Ohio State, Michigan, and Georgia.
Eventually Ohio State and Michigan will knock the other one out–or will they? Given that human element may view a 1-loss Ohio State team who lost to No. 1 Michigan by 2 points a better loss than a 3-point victory by No. 5 Washington over Oregon. Washington appears to control its own destiny–or does it?
Same narrative will be for Georgia and Alabama who will face each other in the SEC Championship Game.
Case in point:
Washington escapes USC, winning by 10 points on the road in Los Angles while Oregon “Drubs” USC at home–winning by 9 points.
Something’s off, at least in the narrative.
The Pac-12 Conference was the talk of the town early on, strolling through the non-conference scheduled with just one loss between its 12 members.
What gives? Where’s the talk of how strong the Pac-12 is this year? Washington will have an opportunity to bolster its resume in Corvallis, Oregon next Saturday against No. 10 Oregon State and none of this will matter if they can’t walk away with “The W”.
We shall see if the College Football Playoff Committee pays attention to facts or if they will continue to write fiction.
