There was a discernible hush that was falling across Autzen Stadium last November 14–at least amongst the Oregon faithful. The closer Washington receiver Taj Davis got the the end zone the roar transitioned from Oregon fans to Husky fans.
Up in Washington’s radio booth Tony Castricone’s voice was cracking from the near 3-hour slug fest that had a lifetime of highlights in the first 56 minutes.
It was an epic showdown between number 6 Oregon Ducks and the number 25 Washington Huskies. At the epicenter was UW receiver Taj Davis who hauled in a 62-yard sideline strike from Husky quarterback Michael Penix to knot the game at 34’s.
Sure, Peyton Henry’s redemption tour was capped off with a clutch kick with 51 seconds remaining giving the Huskies a 37-34 victory.
There was also Jalen McMillan ripping a would-be interception away from Ducks’ defender Christian Gonzalez (taken 17th in the 2023 NFL Draft).
And Ja’Lynn Polk’s 76-yard pinpoint pass from Penix that also went for a score. And RB Cam Davis slithering into the end zone to give the Huskies a 27-24 lead.
On the other side of the ball defensive back Alex Cook greeted Oregon QB Bo Nix at the line kid scrimmage, knocking him out of the game with the game on the line.
And who can forget Husky linebacker Edefuan Ulofoshio’s death-stare that caused Noah Whittington to slip a yard shy of the line of scrimmage on 4th and 1.
Husky running back Wayne Taulapapa’s 13-yard run to open the scoring for the visitors. The hole was so wide open that I could have run through it and scored.
I was on Eugene for Kenny Wheaton’s pick 6, and “The Point” by Jake Browning. For my money, Taj Davis’ spot in Husky lore is will be right up there with some of the greatest moments in Husky history.
Mario Bailey’s bow, Mason Foster’s Immaculate Deflection, and Tommie Smith’s sack on the Night to Remember, All I Saw Was Purple…and many more.
Where does Taj’s TD rank for you?
