He became the head coach for UW after Chris Petersen suddenly stepped down after the 2019 regular season. His first season at the helm for the Huskies was shortened due to the COVID pandemic after serving in other positions during his seven previous seasons with the program.
In his first season at the helm, Lake’s Huskies went 3-1 and won the Pac-12 North Division title. Four players – two on offense and two on defense – earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors and the Huskies also led the conference in total defense. The Huskies had a 7-6 record during Lake’s time as the head coach.
Lake was Washington’s defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach from 2018-19. In 2019, his secondary lost nine defensive starters from the previous year and started as many as three true freshmen in the secondary. His defensive unit limited opposing offenses to 19.4 points per game. Lake helped players such as Elijah Molden earn second-team All-America and first-team All-Pac-12 honors while Myles Bryant was a second-team all-conference selection. Freshman defensive backs Trent McDuffie and Cameron Williams also earned Freshman-All-America honors.
