Offensive Report Card: Washington Huskies Struggle in the Second Half

The Washington Huskies failed to make the necessary adjustments on the offensive side of the ball to be successful in the second half. After a first half in which the Huskies moved the ball effectively and managed to tie the game at seven going into the break, they struggled mightily in the second half—gaining only 54 yards and turning the ball over three times. By the end of the contest, the poor field position proved too much for the Huskies to overcome.

Quarterback:
Demond Williams Jr. had his worst game as a starter. He moved the ball well in the first half, making layered throws into the intermediate zones with touch and using his legs to move the chains. However, the Wolverines were determined not to let him beat them with big plays. The second half was a nightmare. Jedd Fisch called the quick slant too many times, and linebacker Cole Sullivan stepped right into the passing lane for the first interception. A miscommunication with Decker DeGraaf led to the second pick, which was the nail in the coffin for any chance of a comeback. Williams was visibly frustrated on the sidelines.

Running Back:
Is it the chicken or the egg? Jonah Coleman cannot get going. Is he injured, or is the O-line simply unable to create holes? Either way, the running game has taken a massive step back in this game and in recent conference matchups. Coleman does continue to find the end zone, but it’s not enough to spark the offense.

Receivers:
The final interception is on Denzel Boston. He had running room if he managed to make the catch, but instead it fell into the lap of the defensive back on his back. At times, the receivers were open, but Williams missed them.

Offensive Line:
Right now, the offensive game plan is not putting the unit in a position to succeed. Williams has been too stationary behind an injured O-line. Now, with the loss of Maximus McCree, the Huskies desperately need Carver Willis and John Mills back as soon as possible. The right side of the line continues to struggle in creating holes for the running game.
