Offensive Report Card: 43 Points Doesn’t Tell Complete Story

The Washington Huskies took care of the Tulsa Golden Hurricane on Saturday afternoon 43-10. For the second straight week Dylan Morris made an appearance in mop-up duty late in the game.

Kalen DeBoer started the press conference with the most obvious of statements that the Huskies left points out on the field. Anyone who watched the game could easily identify ten points left out on the field. Jalen McMillan ended the second half with a drop of a touchdown then lost a fumble later in the series.

Quarterback: Michael Penix had a very productive day completing 73% of his passes. He hit ten different receivers and scored three touchdowns. He had 409 yards through the air and 11 yards on the ground. The only blemish was an interception in the end zone on a missed pass interference call.

Grade: A

Running Back: Will Nixon got the start and the bulk of the carries. He looked explosive averaging 5 yards a carry. He added 25 yards through the air as well. Nixon is making the case to be the starter even when Dillon Johnson is available. His work in pass protection was on display. Sam Adams broke a tackle on a checkdown for a positive game.

The receivers got in the mix as runners with Odunze, Polk, and Bernard all getting at least one carry; Odunze and Polk found paydirt. The traditional running game is still a concern heading into the teeth of the schedule.

Grade: B-

Receiver: A major issue last week was blocking on the outside. Especially early on bubble screens blocks were missed leading to big hits from Boise State. This was thankfully nixed during the week of practice. Rome Odunze specifically looked violent blocking downfield on many plays around the line of scrimmage.

The final drive of the first half might be the worst performance by Rome Odunze and Jalen McMillan in their last year and two games. Both had a drop with McMillan’s coming on a sure touchdown.

He followed that with a lost fumble in the redzone. Outside of another drop by Odunze the receivers continued to be dominant. Each of the top four receivers scored a touchdown through the air or on the ground.

Denzel Boston made an impressive grab while sitting on the ground on a tipped ball.

Grade: B

Tight End: The tight end room continues to be very solid. The combination of Jack Westover, Devin Culp, Quentin Moore, and Josh Cuevas was solid in pass blocking. Polk had one drop early but showed off his great feet and athleticism with a tightrope run down the sideline for 30 yards.

Grade: A-

Offensive Line: One appropriate adjective for this group is disciplined. They had one holding penalty, but other than that played a tight game. Penix was not sacked and was rarely harassed the entire game. It is evident why Parker Brailsford won the starting job. His violent hands and attacking nature make him effective in the passing game and dangerous when pulling.

Overall the run game needs to be fixed if Washington wants to achieve their goals, but their main objective of keeping Penix upright was a resounding success.
