Offensive Grades: Sack Lake City Goes Sackless in Seattle

The Washington Huskies finished off the Utah Utes 35-28 to reach 10-0 for just the second time in school history. The Husky offense had to battle the swirling winds within the stadium as well as the overly physical Ute secondary for most of the game.

At times the offense had trouble finding it’s rhythm throughout the game, Michael Penix and the offense continued to make the necessary plays to sustain their perfect record.

Quarterback

It was evident from the first drive that the wind was going to be an issue for Penix especially on arching deep shots down the field. He was able to make just enough throws throughout the game with a very tight spiral and throws that looked like they were shot out of a cannon. The most impressive throw was the 43 yard touchdown he threw to Rome Odunze on a post route that cut right through the wind. (Story continues below podcast)

The most impressive thing about that toss was the fact that he threw it flat footed. Penix ended with a lower completion percentage than normal but still put up over 330 yard, two touchdowns through the air, and one on the ground.

Running Back

The national narrative of Washington’s offense being one dimensional needs to be buried. In the three wins against ranked opponents Washington has had a single back eclipse the century every time.

Dillon Johnson yet again ran for over 100 yards as he found and sometimes found running lanes.  He made big plays against the top run defense in the conference and the fifth nationally. Tybo Rogers and Will Nixon also found space in their limited touches as they moved the chains.

Receivers

Rome Odunze had a Randy Moss-esque stat line with three catches for 111 yards and two touchdowns. All afternoon Odunze and Ja’Lynn Polk were held by an over aggressive secondary that finally was flagged in the second half.

That didn’t stop the trio of Odunze, Polk, and Bernard of finding ways to get open and create chunk plays. Each player made big plays that kept drives going as they continued to get open or draw easy penalties.

Tight Ends

Jack Westover and Devin Culp continue to bail this offense out whenever its in need. Jack Westover made maybe the catch of the game sprawling out to convert on a fourth down.

The quartet who includes Quentin Moore and Josh Cuevas, continued not only to find ways to help in the passing game, but gave Michael Penix ample time to find open receivers in the passing game and wear out the Ute defense on the ground.

Offensive Line

All the superlatives have been used on this OL. They are the reason everything else works in the offense. Along with the highly rated rush defense Utah also has one of the premier edge rushers in the nation.

Jonah Elliss went Sackless in Seattle.   He entered the contest with 12 sacks on the season and left with the same number.

According to Pro Football Focus:

Elliss lined up against Roger Rosengarten 57 times: 0 Sacks, 0 QB Hits, and 1 QB Pressure.  Furthermore, Rosengarten held him to just two tackles.

Freshman Parker Brailsford continues to look like the best center in the conference and the supporting cast are all playing at all-conference levels.
