Notes from Day No. 1 of Spring Ball

Notes from Day No. 1 of Spring Ball

The Huskies practiced for around two hours on the east practice field with no pads.

On a cold and windy day it certainty looked like the first official practice of the 2021 football season. It was a bit of a sloppy day for the Huskies – as there were plenty of false starts, bobbled snaps, and dropped passes.  But the major news out of Montlake came from Head Coach Jimmy Lake announcing after practice that outside linebacker Laiatu Latu will be forced to retire after having neck surgery. Latu missed last season but will still be part of the team as a student assistant Lake told reporters Wednesday morning. Lake also announced that tight end Jacob Kizer and defensive back Isaiah Gilchrist are no longer with the program

Some brief practice notes as there wasn’t a whole lot to report –

* The defense as they do almost every year dominated day No. 1 of spring ball. Washington’s defense forced three turnovers on the day. The highlight of the day came from outside linebacker Zion Tupuola-Fetui – when he dropped back in coverage and intercepted a pass from true freshman quarterback San Huard. Dylan Morris was also intercepted by redshirt freshman James Smith.

* It’s only the first practice but Dylan Morris led the No. 1 offense. Colorado State transfer Patrick O’Brien led the No. 2 offense. And true freshman Sam Huard led the No. 3 offense. No quarterback stood out as the defense had their way against UW’s offensive units.

* The highlight of the day for the offense was a 35-yard strike from quarterback Dylan Morris to WR Terrell Bynum beating Cameron Williams in coverage.

* The first team offense consisted of – QB: Dylan Morris, RB: Sean McGrew, WR: Terrell Bynum, WR: Rome Odunze, TE: Cade Otton, TE: Devin Culp, LT: Jaxson Kirkland, LG: Ulumoo Ale, C: Luke Wattenberg, RG: Henry Bainivalu, and RT:Victor Curne. Wide receivers and running backs rotated a lot.

* The first team defense consisted of DL: Fattu Tuitele, DL: Tuli Tetuligasenoa, DL: Sam Taimani, OLB: Ryan Bowman, OLB: Zion Tupuola-Fetui, LB: Jackson Sirmon, LB: Edefuan Ulofoshio, DB: Trent McDuffie, DB: Kyler Gordon, S: Alex Cook, and S: Cameron Williams.  Safeties rotated a lot.

The Huskies return to practice on Friday morning.
