The Huskies again practiced for around two hours on the East Practice field on day No. 3 of fall camp. For the first time of camp, UW put on the shoulder pads. It was the defense this time shinning over the offense. Here are some notes and observations from practice.
* The defense had a much better day after seeing the offense bettering them on Saturday. The first team defense created three turnovers. Elijah Molden intercepted two Jake Haener passes. Both times Molden jumped the route perfectly and picked off the pass. After the No. 1 offense had a good drive going led by QB Jake Haener, Myles Bryant intercepted a Haener pass over the middle in the end zone. Overall, it was a very solid day that got to hear the sound of the air horn (whenever the defense gets a turnover) throughout practice.
* The quarterback competition between Jake Haener and Jacob Eason heated up a little today. Haener got most of the reps. with the No. 1’s and started practice off very nicely. But Haener started forcing the issue a bit and it resulted in him throwing three interceptions on the day. Outside of today, Haener has looked very good. It seemed like today was the day of Jacob Eason. He ran most of his reps. with the No. 2’s. Eason’s highlight of the day came in an 11-on-11 session when he threw a 45-yard TD strike to McClatcher. Jacob Eason also had a very nice throw over the middle to Hunter Bryant. The competition is ongoing but we will give this day to Eason.
* Chico McClatcher again had another good day at camp. Not only did he catch the 45-yard TD from Eason but he continues to get open and for the most part catches everything thrown his way. McClatcher is mostly running with the No. 2 offense. Another WR that has impressed is Trey Lowe. The redshirt freshman has two touchdowns and should have a third after dropping a long TD yesterday. But Lowe has shown the ability to get open and be explosive this camp. Although he’s taken most he reps. with the No. 2 and No. 3 offense, Lowe is a player who could climb the depth chart very quickly.
* The No. 1 offense and No. 1 defense looked much of the same as yesterday. Probably most of note is that freshmen Cameron Williams and Kyler Gordon (redshirt) have run with the No. 1 defense all three days of camp.
