Notes and Video from day No. 5 of fall camp

The Huskies practiced for over two hours on the east practice field on day No. 5 of fall camp. UW has yet to practice in full pads this camp as they had just helmets and shoulder pads today. Here are some notes and observations from practice –

* This was probably the defense’s best practice of fall camp. It started in warm-ups as the defense had a little more energy than normal and it carried on through practice. For most of the practice UW quarterbacks were forced to check the ball down because of how good the coverage was. The air horn (which goes off after a turnover seemed to being going off every few minutes). In total UW forced four interceptions. Below is a list of the interceptions:

  • Jake Haener intercepted by Kyler Gordon in 7-on-7 – pass intended for Ty Jones
  • Jacob Sirmon picked off by freshman Asa Tuner on scramble in 7-on-7
  • Sirmon intercepted by Dustin Bush in 11-on-11 after pass got tipped
  • Dylan Morris intercepted by Dominique Hampton

* Speaking of defense, freshman outside linebacker Laiatu Latu continues to be very impressive through five days of camp. Today he accounted for two (would be) sacks. Latu could be a very special player down the road and could contribute right away this season. Latue has mostly been put with the No. 2 and No. 3 defense but that could change as camp goes on.

* Jake Haener probably got the better of the QB competition today. He led the No. 2 offense on a TD drive at the end of practice. Haener completed two really nice passes over the middle to Ty Jones and TE Devin Culp before finding TE Jack Westover in the back of the end zone for the lone TD of the day for the offense.

* Jacob Eason’s streak of four straight fall practices without an interception almost came to an end today when a pass for WR Marquis Spiker carried right into true freshman safety Cameron Williams’ hands. (Side note: Cameron Williams is having a very good camp so far.) But Spiker was held on the play and the offense retained the ball. Eason’s best drive of the day came at the end of practice when he completed numerous short passes before the drive finally stalled in the red zone resulting in a Peyton Henry short field goal.

* One very concerning issue has been how many drops have come from wide receivers this camp. Today, I counted at least five drops. It’s early in camp but the team isn’t even in full pads yet which is concerning.

* But despite the drops there were some impressive plays by the wideouts today. Jordan Chin made a diving catch from Jacob Sirmon for about 25 yards. Austin Osborne also beat Dustin Bush in coverage making a nice diving grab from QB Jacob Sirmon. True freshman Puka Nacua had a nice leaping grab over the middle from Dylan Morris. And Hunter Bryant looked good again catching a ton of passes over the middle.

* As far as special teams goes, Joel Whitford looks to have a commanding lead as the No. 1 punter. Aaron Fuller took reps. as the No. 1 punter returner followed by Chico McClatcher. Peyton Henry seemed to separate himself today in the kicking competition as he converted all three field goal attmeps inside 40 yards. Freshman Tim Horn had a tough day making just 1-3 short field goals.
