On a chilly and rainy day on Montlake, the media got to see a first glimpse of the new University of Washington Adidas football uniforms. The jerseys where unveiled on a boat the was docked right by the ASUW Shell House. Members of the media were asked to put their cell phones in a locked case to avoid any photos being taken.
While music was played the gates from a small ship container were opened and the jerseys were unveiled. The jerseys were exactly like the picture that leaked on social media just a few days ago.
But seeing them in person, I was actually more impressed. The three uniform combos that were shown, were as followed –
1. gold helmet, white jersey, and white pants
2. gold helmet, purple jersey, and gold pants.
3. gold helmet, white jersey, and purple pants.
Some of the features include:
- Block Don James era numbers
- Purple rain drops built into the numbers – only seen up close.
- Gold pants fabric close to the same color of gold helmets (a little different due to the fabric)
- Seamless jerseys
- No black on jerseys (many fans complained about the previous UW black uniforms)
My takeaway
Adidas and their designers did an incredible job with the designs of these jerseys. They are very easy to look at and they are the closest jersey I’ve seen that resembles the great 1990’s teams uniforms that so many fans grew up watching. The uniform will center around the gold helmet that Don James made famous. The jerseys are simple in a good way. They don’t have any unnecessary designs but are also not boring. Some of the great college football programs have stayed with their tradition. And I think Adidas has done just that with these jerseys.
Grade: A
Washington is the 12th power-five conference to join Adidas compared to the 60 plus that Nike has partnered with. The University of Washington will unveil the uniforms to the public on July 10th.
