“I knew where I was going for a long time”, the Lawndale (CA) defensive back told Realdawg.com about announcing his decision.
Recruited to play safety for Washington, Makell Esteen begins his season on August 30th, and getting this decision out of the way definitely frees him up to concentrate on his season and stay focused on Lawndale football.
Esteen was on the UW campus back in June for an official visit, but he still made that call to the Husky coaches to make things official, “He was very excited to hear the news”, he said of Coach Lake, “He knew I was going to be a Dawg soon.”
And the coaches had a lot to do with his decision, “The relationship with the coaches from day one”, he noted as the top reason for choosing the Huskies.
Right now it’s uncertain if Esteen will be an early enrollee, but he does plan to sign in December, and right now he said he is “very” relieved to have this decision out of the way.
Now the wait begins for his teammate, Elijah Jackson. Jackson was set to announce on Saturday but delayed that announcement. But there’s good reason to believe that he will join Esteen in adding his name to the Husky Class of 2020 roster at some point — possibly even as soon as today.
Esteen isn’t a big talker, he’s a rather quiet young man who lets his work on the field speak for itself. He chose the Huskies over 13 other schools, and is better than the three-star rating that 247 gave him. Under the teaching of Lake and Harris he will be a dominating safety at the next level, and Washington is going to benefit from his skillset for years to come.
