Terrence Brown, who began his coaching career at Washington, will return to the Huskies’ staff for the 2020 season, head coach Jimmy Lake announced today.
Brown, a two-year starting cornerback at Stanford, has spent the last two seasons as cornerbacks coach at Vanderbilt.
“I would like to thank head coach, Jimmy Lake, and athletic director, Jennifer Cohen, for this opportunity,” said Brown. “I am honored and grateful to be a part of the University of Washington football program and can’t wait to teach, mentor, develop and lead our student-athletes under Coach Lake’s vision. My wife and I are beyond excited to return to Seattle and reunite with Husky nation.”
“I’m very excited to have Terrence coming back to Seattle to join our staff and work alongside Will Harris as they lead our defensive backs,” Lake said. “He’s a dynamic, talented coach who has proven that he knows how to do things the right way.”
Brown spent three seasons as a graduate assistant on Chris Petersen’s staff at the UW, from 2015 to 2017, helping Lake with the Husky secondary. The Huskies led the Pac-12 in total defense and scoring defense all three of those years and won the Pac-12 title in 2016, earning a spot in the College Football Playoff.
In his three years on Montlake, he worked with a long list of future NFL players, including Kevin King, Budda Baker, Sidney Jones, Zeke Turner, Byron Murphy, Taylor Rapp and Jordan Miller. Husky DBs earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors five times in those three seasons, while Baker and Jones were both All-America.
In his first season at Vanderbilt in 2018, Brown coached Joejuan Williams, who led all Southeastern Conference cornerbacks in interceptions (four) and passes defended (18). Williams earned All-SEC from both the coaches and the Associated Press and was selected by the Patriots in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft, the 45th overall selection.
Brown, a native of Compton, Calif., and a graduate of Orange Lutheran High, attended Stanford, where he was a three-year letterman (2010-12). In 2010, he played in six games for a Cardinal squad that went 12-1 and beat Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl. The following year, he played in 13 and started nine games as Stanford went 11-2.
As a senior in 2012, Brown started all 14, totaling 65 tackles as the Cardinal went 12-2, won the Pac-12 and beat Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl.
Brown earned his bachelor’s degree in science, technology & society from Stanford in 2013. Following his college career, he signed a free-agent deal with the Cincinnati Bengals.
Once Lake has completed his staff for 2020, the assistant coaches’ titles will be finalized and announced.
