Nation’s Number 1 Passer, Washington’s Penix Can Kickstart Heisman Campaign at the Alamo Bowl

From RGIII to KP1. The 2011 Alamo Bowl was light on defense, but heavy on excitement.

Robert Griffin III was fresh off of winning the Heisman Trophy Award and was vastly outplayed by Keith Price. Price accounted for seven touchdowns with 438 passing yards and 39 more on the ground.

While the Huskies lost the game 56-67 Keith Price started showing up on Heisman watch lists

Fast forward to this Thursday, the Huskies are back in the Alamo bowl with a talented quarterback poised to light up the scoreboard.

In reality, Michael Penix’s 2022 Heisman campaign should have started when he torched Michigan State for 397 yards on 24 of 40 passing with four touchdowns and no interceptions.  He put backed that up all season long but on the road in November on Oregon’s field he led the Dawgs to a 37-34 win over the then #6 team in the nation.  In that game he had two of the best throws in college football this season.

After the Apple Cup there were finally rumblings from media and pundits were beginning to interest in the lefty.

Now, Penix and the Huskies will be on a massive stage with all eyes on them. The University of Texas is a blue blood that will capture the eyeballs of the nation.

It won’t be easy given that one of the top defensive minds in the game, former Washington defensive coordinator Pete Kwaitkowski is now Texas’ DC.  Not to mention that he will have had a couple of weeks to prepare for the lefty.

If Penix does what he has done all season the east coast media will see how good he is and should catapult him into the mix for a legitimate contention for the Heisman in the 2023 season.
