Monday Petersen Notes and Video: A Little Sugar, a Little Salt

Chris Petersen got to the podium a few minutes late this morning, but once he sat down and began to field questions from the media.

While being in a relatively happy mood, Petersen still was a little salty to the media — and the longer he’s at Washington the more he’s begun to sound like Don James.

He’s never happy with anything, but protects his team — and he asserts that a win is still a win.

But his quips at reporter’s questions are right to the point.

The question is asked about the targeting calls on Utah Saturday:

“Is this like a softball question? You talk about how physical we played and we had no targeting. The rules are changing and have changed for the better of the game.”

Translation: It’s about keeping the game safer, not softer. Just do it right and there will be issues with targeting.

Petersen emphasized how big of a win the Utah game was for the Huskies, and began the press conference by calling out the press for the “negativity” — this win was a big deal for Washington.

All in all, Petersen said that he feels his team is on the trajectory but they need to continue to improve in areas such as the ever-changing rotation on the offensive line, helping Jake Browning out in tough pocket situations, and the punting game.

“We’ve got to kick the ball better. We’ve got to kick it more accurate. We have a definite strategy of how we want it kicked, we’ve got to get better at that”, he said.

Petersen also added that they hoped to get Joel Whitford back “sooner or later.”
