Midweek Recruiting Notebook: 11/20

This week has been rather slow; not just because I’ve been on the disabled list, but just because things are “slow”, doesn’t mean nothing is getting done.

I can continue to assert that there will be some new twists and turns to report on, and a couple of things will come to light and make sense — and as if that isn’t ambiguous enough, I did some checking and there’s no indication that Jalen McMillan’s tweet meant anything at all.

As of right now, it looks like the Husky receiver class of 2020 is done. McMillan is solid, Rome Odunze is solid, and Sawyer Racanelli is solid.

There was a guy I had heard was being checked out over the weekend, but nothing became of that — so unless Gary Bryant shocks the net and commits to Washington, it is pretty safe to assume that this position group is done — and it’s extremely good as is.

The main areas of focus are:

** Possibly one more defensive back

** A tight end

** One or two defensive ends

Of those groups the one I would be the most attentive to right now is the defensive end position.

There’s been some chatter that the Huskies aren’t as high on Lance Keneley’s list as once thought, but I’ve heard just the opposite from sources close to Keneley. I suppose it depends on who’s doing the interview, but sometimes it’s best to talk to a source who has no dog in the fight to get a better read on the situation.

Xavier Carlton is still working on getting up to the Apple Cup and will be taking his official trip in December. I truly like UW’s shot here, and while that’s not the general opinion of others in the industry, I really don’t care. I know what I know.

Let’s look around the Pac-12…

There’s a little bit of talk about recruiting momentum for Utah this year, but what I’ve heard is that a lot of recruits understand that the Utes are just having a good year, and it’s not something that has been or will be the norm for years to come.

With UCLA, there’s still questions as to whether or not Chip Kelly will get it all together. The Bruins have been doing a little better, but from those around Westwood I’ve talked to the question marks still remain.

USC is a car crash, and every kid I talk to says they don’t expect to see this staff back after the end of the season. There’s been a lot of buzz about Urban Meyer, and apparently their new A.D. has some connection there (honestly, it’s too late at night and I don’t want to go research this so if someone could do me that honor I would appreciate it). This would be a mammoth move if he were to go to USC.

Oregon will continue to recruit well, they always do.

There’s rumors up here in Coug-ville that Mike Leach could be a candidate for the Florida State job (possibly Tennessee too if they can their coach).

Herm Edwards and Kevin Sumlin aren’t getting much done at the Arizona schools.

Oregon State will never recruit at the level of Washington or Oregon (where the Northwest schools are concerned) but the Beavers are on a better trajectory now than they have been on in several years.

Cal will continue to recruit at a decent level, as will Stanford.

I’m not so sure what to say about Colorado, however. Without being very familiar with their new coach it’s hard to get a read on where things are with them. I don’t hear their name come up much when talking to recruits.

Washington is definitely keeping consistent momentum with recruiting right now and it shows in the rankings.

So, in a nutshell, my feeling is that — until USC turns things around — the Huskies and Ducks are the top dogs in Pac-12 recruiting.

Apple Cup Weekend…

I’ve heard a lot of names of guys coming to town that weekend; but there could be a couple surprises.

One would be 2021 Texas DL, Tunmise Adeleye. I know he dropped a list and Washington wasn’t on it, but I talked to him a couple of weeks ago and he told me that some of that was just because of some miscommunications and that, if Washington was going to continue to pursue him, he would love to get to Seattle to check out UW.

Another guy who might make it to town that weekend is Hawai’i 2021 offensive lineman, Kuao Peihopa of Kamehameha.

Utah 2021 DE Logan Fano told me he’s trying to make it up to Seattle that weekend as well.

I will be confirming a couple more guys who had mentioned trying to get to town that weekend.

I do have a name of a guy who has set up an official visit for December, and it’s a familiar name — I will try to get that released sometime this evening or before the weekend at the latest.

To be honest, I really don’t want to get into this defensive back situation at this point.

Just this week a guy from Alabama entered the transfer portal and so this is all becoming really confusing and murky. I stick to what I know and don’t want to try to speculate anymore on the rest. It’s just…weird.

I heard another name being tossed around that the coaches have been watching — and the guys who have been committed are quiet as church mouses. Even long-trusted sources have said they are just as uncertain as to what is going on as I am.

Hey, I just work here.

So that’s about it for today. I’m going to stick an icebag back on my shoulder and try to heal up.

Happy Hump Day Dawgfans!
