Michigan State’s Mel Tucker Calls Husky QB Penix “One of the best players in the country”

Washington starting quarterback Michael Penix Jr. put on an absolute show in UW’s 39-28 win over No. 11 Michigan State Saturday night at Husky Stadium.

The former Indiana QB passed for 397 yards and four touchdowns in the win.

Penix Jr. not only had Husky fans impressed but he got high praise from Michigan State head coach Mel Tucker.

“Like I said during the week, he’s one of the best players in the country we think,” Tucker said after the game about Michael Penix Jr.

Penix Jr. was in such a groove that even his incompletions were impressive. The 68,161 fans in attendance haven’t seen quarterback play like that in a very long time.

From the start Penix was in a groove. On his first drive, Penix was 3-3 passing for 60 yards and a TD. The highlight of the drive was a 47-yard strike from Penix to Jalen McMillan.

Washington would score on five of their first six drives. And wouldn’t punt until 41 seconds were left in the third quarter.

“He’s just putting the ball where it needs to go,” an almost speechless Kalen DeBoer said about Penix’s performance. “You got a guy you can win football games with. Not just try to manage a game. He’s got so much belief by his teammates and him. And he’s just so calm and collective.”

Penix through three games has passed for 1,079 yards, 10 touchdowns, and just one interception. Is it too early to start talking about the Heisman?
