His nickname is “Boom”, and when you take into account the fact that Cajon (San Bernardino, CA) 4-star edge-rusher, Jeremiah Martin is trying to set a new record for sacks this weekend, the nickname is warranted.
“I have 30”, he said.
Sacks? Yes — sacks. And he’s going for five more this weekend when his school takes on Serra for the state title, “I want to get 35.”
Yes — that is just completely sick and ridiculous. But it’s a big reason why so many schools (17, in fact) offered Martin this year. Washington waited and watched, and played their hand almost to perfection.
They have, what could be, the last visit of the process from Martin.
He’s already visited Oklahoma and Texas A&M, but don’t let all that Crystal Ball mumbo-jumbo fool you — the Huskies are a very high interest for Martin.
“Coach Keith (Bhonapha) came by again today to watch me practice”, he told Realdawg.com, and last week Pete Kwiatkowski was at his school — while both coaches were in Martin’s home two weeks ago. The coaches have formed a strong relationship with Martin and it could make a big difference down the stretch.
They need an edge-rusher, and Martin is a quarterback crushing machine.
At 6-5, 248, Martin is cat-quick and has an explosive first step and a very high motor. He’s physically strong and also agile — he could be a Travis Feeney-type for the Huskies.
But bigger.
Feeney is now with the Steelers.
Martin plays basketball and has a good wingspan. And he would be the frosting on the cake of an already terrific defensive class for the Huskies in 2018.
“I like Washington — I do have a high interest in them”, he said, adding that he’s very excited for the official visit on January 19th, “I don’t have any other visits planned aside from that.”
What we know is that this is a distinct possibility. The main reason Martin had to put his decision day off is because his playoff schedule. His team is 13-1 and they play this Friday at 4 pm.
And as we said, keep in mind that the Crystal Ball predictions for Martin were made before Washington even offered and became involved, but the relationship had already been formed. Martin was first evaluated at the Redlands camp last summer where Husky coaches helped as guest instructors, so he had that chance to get to know the Husky coaches.
So if anyone thought that, after December 20th, the fireworks would be over? Forget that notion. Keep your eye on what goes on with Martin — he’s a big target for the Dawgs going forward and they have a great shot at landing him.
