Keys to the Game: Washington Travels to Wisconsin

Keys to the Game: Washington Travels to Wisconsin

The Washington Huskies travel to the other UW–University of Wisconsin for an afternoon kick off.  While the Badgers are winless in the conference, there’s still a significant home field advantage at Camp Randall.  Here are the keys for Washington to leave Madison with a win:

Avoid the “Trap”: There is no reason for this to be a game after half time. While Wisconsin looked much improved last weekend against Oregon they have not beat a power-4 team this season.

The bottom line is Wisconsin is a bad football team and all morale seemed to have left the building before they kept things “close” against Oregon.

This has all the markings of a trap game with Washington beginning to look ahead to their season finale against Oregon and going into one of the nations toughest places to play.

While the Huskies have a bad habit of starting slow there is no reason for that to happen today.

As much as the long road trip and Camp Randall atmosphere may cause some adversity for Washington this is the game you expect your offensive leaders to step up.

Demond Williams and Jonah Coleman should be expected to take control early and bury this Badger team.

Wisconsin has given up at least 200 yards to opponents rushing or passing attacks in every game except their opener against Miami (OH).

With the big play ability contained by the Huskies offense it’s not unrealistic to wonder if they could hit both 200+ in the air and on the ground.

Make Plays: For a defense that has struggled to make a massive impact on games this year this is an opportunity to get things right.

Wisconsin quarterback Hunter Simmons had been short of the 100 yard passing mark in three consecutive games, but his benching means the Huskies will see a fresh face in either Danny O’Neill or ___

This is a game for Washington’s defensive playmakers to really ____. While Alex McLaughlin has emerged as a leader on this defense and Xe’Ree Alexander has been a pleasant surprise the lack of attack from the defensive front has made life challenging for the Huskies secondary.

While we know what we are getting from the aforementioned players as well as Tacario Davis and Ephesians Prysock it seems we have waited for the defensive line to stake a claim all year long.

Playing on the road in an undoubtedly challenging environment, not only stopping the Badgers, but pushing them backwards could be the difference between a trap game and backing things up at halftime.

Play Within Yourself: While the expectation should be to dominate from kickoff to final whistle the Wisconsin home advantage is very real.
In terms of talent and team performance the Huskies are miles better than the Badgers. But factor in the Wisconsin weather, the long trip, and the home fans and mistakes can pile up quickly.

Taking care of the football needs to be a priority in what is expected to be sloppy conditions. Along with valuable extra possessions turnover
