Joe Tryon selected 32nd overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Joe Tryon selected 32nd overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Tom Brady and the Buccaneers just got the highest upside edge rusher in this draft. Tryon, who only has one full year of starting experience, burst onto the scene in 2019, before opting out of the 2020 pandemic shortened season to prepare for the NFL Draft.

He has an excellent arsenal of pass rush moves, and will be able to continue to refine them while working on his bend off the edge. It’s clear that improving his bend what he spent his opt-out time working on, and as he’s able to get reps against NFL tackles, he should take the next step towards his ceiling, which is a Pro Bowl pass rusher.

Tryon will be joining a defensive line that already has former Husky Vita Vea, along with Shaq Barrett and Jason Pierre-Paul on the front, and that should help him see a lot of one on one matchups early on in his NFL career. With Tampa’s scheme, he’ll be able to do what he did best at Washington, everything. He can use his quickness as a standup edge, he can put his hand in the dirt, and even drop into pass coverage if need be.

Fit Grade: B+

This is going to be a great fit for Tryon. He’s going to be able to do a little bit of everything along the defensive front, whether it be playing with his hand in the dirt, as a standup edge, or dropping into coverage, Tampa Bay’s defense will unlock Tryon to the best of his ability.

Not only that, but being on a team with Barrett and Pierre-Paul is perfect for his development. He has a great stand-up edge rusher to learn from in Barrett, and Pierre-Paul is one of the best in the league with his hand in the dirt.

Joining the reigning Super Bowl champs Bucs is a great long-term fit for Tryon, but it might not be best for his production as a rookie. Expect to see him on a lot of obvious passing downs, and with his speed, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Tampa try to use him on some stunts. As he continues to develop and work on his hand fighting and bend, he could easily turn into the best pass rusher from this draft class.
