The Pac-12 did their best to provide a remote “Media Day” with the conference coaches. Normally, this would have taken place in L.A. under the July sunshine, so this was helpful as the media prepares to cover Pac-12 football this coming winter.
Jimmy Lake took to Zoom with us, and answered a wide array of questions, but the high point was when he talked about his model for how a 6-team college football playoff would work.
We’ll let the video portion of his article explain itself, but Lake said he’s floated this idea internally; to Jen Cohen in particular, but it may go national now because Fox Sports columnist, Bruce Feldman was the reporter picking Lake’s brain on this.
Aside from that, Lake talked about who may be lining up behind center come gameday against Cal, “It will be more of when it feels right that that person as earned that job”, he said, adding that this could be said for all positions, “As soon as someone takes control…then we will make that announcement at that time. We may have multiple guys play (if it does’t feel right).”
Also discussed was the idea of a 9 AM kickoff, “I don’t mind”, Lake said, noting that this would be helpful for East Coast media fans, as well as other football coaches.
And Lake still believes in an East Coast bias, “. The way to change it is to go win those games and get them to come out here to our neck of the woods.” This tied into his model for a playoff.
“I’ve had this model set up since the college football playoff started”, Lake said, “Football fans would drool over this schedule.”
Lake’s oldest son actually helped him map it out, “It took less than an hour”, he said, “It takes the subjectivity out of it.”
