We will have a complete video of the Zoom call we had this morning with Jimmy Lake and Rob Scheidegger, Associate Athletic Director for Health & Wellness/Head Football Athletic Trainer.
In the meantime, the biggest surprise of the morning was learning that Husky DL, Sama Pa’ama has decided to “retire” from football.
Lake didn’t elaborate the reasons for this, but this is a loss for the Husky interior D-line going forward and Pa’ama was a player that Ikaika Malloe was excited about getting on the field
Here’s quotes from Lake’s opening statement:
“I’m proud of the way they’ve handled not being able to meet in a normal setting room…all these brand new things”, he said, “they just come to work every single day with their sleeves up and ready to go and I’m proud of them of how they’re navigating through all these new challenges.”
Lake talked about “new entrance” to the facilities, and said he didn’t want his team to be “guinea pigs”
“If things are not going to be safe and we need to air on the side of caution”, he said, “I know when the time is right they will tell us we can play and I will be ready to go”.
.
The rest of the meeting addressed the issues surrounding COVID, how the team is dealing with the various issues relating to the postponed season, and how this effects recruiting.
Lake said, at this point, the staff is feeling good about the current class (2021) and that they don’t foresee any issues that would effect their continued efforts, but he did explain that there hasn’t yet been any discussions from the NCAA regarding changes in signing days.
Obviously, the Dead Period is in place across the board, so (for example), even though some schools will play this season, they still cannot host recruits on unofficial or official visits.
Lake also noted that there will be allowances made for the number of scholarshipped athletes on the roster.
Lake fielded many questions and we will try to get as much transcribed as possible, but the video will be uploaded of the entire meeting.
