Instant Reaction: Washington Reimagines “Dawg Walk”

“‘Be a pro’,” said RealDawg.com’s Trevor Mueller.  “That’s the moniker for Jedd Fisch’s football institution at Washington.  It resonates throughout the program.”

Fisch’s new standard also includes better involvement by the Washington fans, making a plea for greater financial involvement but also wanting increased fan-player engagement.

“He doesn’t just have a clear ideal of what being a pro entails for his players,” Moeller continued.  “He clearly has a grasp on what the college football experience should be for everyone around the program, including the fans.”

To that point Fisch talked about new traditions within the program earlier in the day, ahead of the video release.

“Husky Nation you are the first thing our players see the players see when they step off the bus on Saturday,” the narrator’s deep voice says in a video released on social media Tuesday afternoon.

“You set the tone for the day,” the narrator continued– the players need your energy– they feel it, they feed off of it.  When they step off that bus it is time to create a visual that up holds the prestige of the greatest setting,”

In the call to action, the video goes on to talk about the big opportunities of the Big 10 Conference, before revealing the new route for the Dawg Walk.

For several years the player’s busses’ route has been from a Bellevue hotel, across the 520 Bridge then up Montlake Boulevard, then dropping the players off by the southeast entrance.   There the Dawg Walk would go through fans in The Zone.

“The old route greatly missed the mark.  It was for fans who have already entered the stadium, leaving out the tailgaters,” Mueller noted.

Now the football players will exit the bus at the Graves Bounding and walk along Montlake Boulevard in front of Hec Edmundson Pavilion then right through fans who are waiting to enter Husky Stadium and in the Dawg Pack entrance.

“I really hope that it leads to more fans being in their seats for when the players come out onto the field just before kickoff,” Mueller stated.

With an 8 PM kickoff Saturday night against Weber State, there should be plenty of fans gathered along the route after several hours of Sailgating and Tailgating.
