Impact Statement: Washington Will Have Options at Quarterback

The Washington Huskies secured the commitment of quarterback Demond Williams Jr. out of the State of Arizona. Williams had previously been committed to the Wildcats before being released from his NLI after the coaching change.

Williams brings some stability to a quarterback room with a ton of turnover. Michael Penix Jr. is headed to the NFL, Dylan Morris is headed to James Madison, Austin Mack is following Kalen DeBoer and staff to Alabama, and Will Rogers reentered the transfer portal although he has been seen on campus when Jedd Fisch arrived on Montlake.

Demond Williams Jr. is an electric quarterback with elite athleticism. Standing at around 5-11 he is a true dual threat quarterback who throws effectively in the pocket and on the run. He can sling the ball deep downfield and place the ball perfectly in the outstretched arms of his receivers.

Coach Velasco said that he reminds him of former Eastern Washington and Oregon quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. who was effective deep down the field as well as a dangerous runner. He is a 4-year starter at Basha High School, in Chandler Arizona.

While Williams’ commitment brings some clarity to the position there is still work to do and decisions to be made to complete this position for the 2024 season.

First of all, Will Rogers will need to decide his future. The transfer from Mississippi State looked like the bridge starter in 2024 to give way to 3 years of Austin Mack. Mack is in Tuscaloosa and Rogers has a decision to make. While Rogers is in the portal, he was present in the locker room when Jedd Fisch was introduced to the players.

Secondly, is 2024 quarterback Dermaricus Davis. Davis signed under the previous staff and was heavily recruited by Ryan Grubb, but was also recruited by Jimmie Dougherty who is now on Montlake. It wouldn’t be the first time the Huskies took two 4-star quarterbacks in the same class, but time will tell is Davis sticks around to compete or he moves somewhere else.

Regardless of what happens Demond Williams Jr. is a Husky and brings stability and an exciting option for the Husky offense for years to come.
