Impact Statement: Washington Mens Basketball Shows Life in Season-Opener

Despite the slow start the Washington Huskies got a convincing win over Bellarmine. The Huskies trailed out of the gates being down 22-15 at one point in the first half. The slow start did nothing to discourage the Huskies from attacking.

From that seven point deficit transfer guard Nate Calmese would score a quick five points to give the Husky offense some life. Koren Johnson and Keion Brooks Jr. would take over from there as the duo combined for 47 of the Huskies 91 points. Johnson’s 25 surpassed his career high of 15.

This is a great way for the Huskies to open the season and a great win for coach Mike Hopkins. Hopkins’ name has been all over the talk of hot seats in college basketball. Koren Brooks, who has publicly been a big supporter of Coach Hopkins had himself a night.

Brooks earlier last month said that he would run through a brick wall for Coach Hopkins. One thing that we do know is that the players love Hopkins. It in the NIL world having his 23 defensive scheme is good when he has the players to execute it, and building that is something that has to be done over the course of years in developing players within the system.

However, to succeed in the NIL world adjusting your scheme to suit the personnel is the key to success.  It’s becoming harder and harder for to develop players who physically suit the requirements of his scheme.

With the big win the Huskies turn their focus to Northern Kentucky on Thursday. The Norse lost in Murfreesboro to start the season Middle Tennessee.
