Impact Statement: Washington DB Coach is Aligning the Recruiting Stars

The stars continue to align for the Huskies. Peyton Waters is the latest in a string of huge additions for the University of Washington.  Listed as a 4-star athlete, Waters is from Birmingham High School in Los Angeles.  Last season he played both defensive back and wide receiver, but the expectation is that Waters will take most of his snaps on the defensive side of the ball for coach Julius Brown.

Waters is one of the nation’s top recruits from a defensive back standpoint and chose to play for Brown.  Like a handful of 4-star defensive backs in the past 18 months Brown is a massive part in Waters’ decision.  In Brown’s short time clearly flexing his ability as a recruiter.  Digging a bit deeper into Brown’s short track recruiting record at Washington he just might be DeBoer’s best recruiter.

“Coach Juice” as the players often call Brown, is aligning the stars.  After a great class last season that included a late flip of 4-star Caleb Presley, he also signed 4-star Curley Reed from LSU’s backyard, 4-star safety Vincent Holms and 3-star Leroy Bryant.  From the Transfer Portal, he got 4-star Jabbar Mohammad and 3-star Thaddeus Dixon.

Brown secured a second big recruit for the 2024 class as Waters joins 3-star CB Elias Johnson from Jesuit High in Portland, Oregon.

Waters had a huge season for Birmingham, with 51 tackles, 4 interceptions, 4 pass breakups, and even blocked 2 field goals.  The Husky commit helped lead his team to Los Angeles sectional champions last season. If that type of play transfers up north, Waters will be the next piece of the iconic Husky defense.

And brings us to Diesel Gordon whose dad, Joe, was once the recruiting coordinator at Kansas State.  It says a whole lot to have a former recruiting coordinator trust someone else with his own son.  If there’s one person who could smell the stench of recruiting bull it would be Joe Gordon.

Brown has been tasked with rebuilding a recruiting room that has had more players play for 3 years and head to the NFL.  That has made Juice’s job o the recruiting trail all that more important.  He’s had to back-fill from high school ranks but also front-fill with the transfer portal.  Either way, he’s aligning the stars.
