Impact Statement: Understanding Washington’s New Staff Winning the Re-Recruitment of 4-Star Offensive Lineman of Paki Finau

Arguably the most important recommitment went down Monday afternoon when 4-star offensive lineman Paki Finau officially took his name out of the transfer portal. The high-end prospect was a welcome recommitment as Jedd Fisch and staff will have to rebuild an offensive line that is either moving onto the NFL or the SEC.

This is a massive recruiting win for the new staff as Finau has tremendous upside. The 6-5, 265-pound interior lineman projects as an interior lineman, but he also boasts fluid feet and explosive movements that one can project playing not only at an all-conference level but almost any offensive line position in college.

And a nasty streak that’s coveted by the NFL as is his ability to play on the outside and looks the part of a high-end tackle.

The importance of this commitment is massively important to the health of the position in the program long term, it also helps in the short term.

While it is not common to have a true freshman start on an offensive line, it does happen and Finau will have every opportunity to compete. Per his Twitter, he lists himself at 265 pounds which would be light for someone starting along the line.

He does have a summer to bulk up under the guidance of strength and conditioning coach Tyler Owens will likely push him toward the 275-280-pound range without losing his quickness.

While I see it as unlikely that Finau will find himself on the starting line come August 31 when Weber State rolls into town, the recommitment raises the talent in a room that is lacking bodies at this moment.

Paki staying gives the Huskies a fantastic prospect, but also is yet another data point to show the recruiting chops of Coach Fisch and this coaching staff.

However, his reaffirming his commitment to Washington is good news a couple of years down the road but the Huskies will likely have an eye on Transfer Portal in the Springtime.  The portal can be used to bridge the gap between last year’s national championship run and the slew of up-and-coming offensive linemen.
