It appears that the Washington Huskies will have a Spring Game for the first time in nearly 10 years. The return of the purple versus gold game for the 2023 football season makes it apparent that the entirety of the Washington Football program is setting up for something special.
After finishing 11-2, and a Dawg’s whisker away from the College Football Playoffs, Washington is getting creative with its Spring Football schedule.
The first three practices (March 6, 8, 9) and the final 11 practices and the Spring Game on April 22nd will have a three-week break.
There are several advantages to having an actual Spring Game. Perhaps the most notable one being on the defensive side of the ball.
”Tackling was an issue last season,” said RealDawg.com’s Trevor Mueller. “The return of the Spring Game and the practices in the lead up will give the coaches a better opportunity correct issues long before Fall Camp.”
The Huskies will need to be clicking from the get-go when the Boise State Broncos roll into town on September 2nd. Last season BSU finished the season outside the AP Top 25, but will be looking to make a statement at Husky Stadium to start the season.
There may also be some personnel intrigue in the days leading up to March the 6th as the Huskies will need to get to the scholarship limit of 85. Best estimations are that Washington appears to be 3-4 players over the limit.
“Over the next 20 days some sort of attrition may occur,” said RealDawg.com’s Trevor Mueller. “Technically, player’s can’t enter the Transfer Portal until May 1 without a penalty or waiver with their new schools.”
However, there are some options available to the team to get to 85 as the players who have used up their eligibility, declared for the NFL Draft or have transferred won’t be taking up a roster spot.
“Given the amount of early enrollees and incoming transfers it should mean that all of the current players on the roster will be able to participate,” Mueller noted.
With the Spring Football wrapping up 8 days before the Transfer Portal opens up again.
”With an extra week to peruse the portal, Washington will be able to make any final personnel moves necessary,” Mueller said.
The University has yet to formally announce the Spring Football schedule.
