IMPACT STATEMENT: Nearly a Fourth of Washington’s Two-Deeps are Transfers

The Washington Huskies will put the nation’s second-longest winning streak on the line against Boise State on Saturday.  Led by Indiana quarterback transfer Michael Penix, a shade under one-fourth of the players on UW’s two-deep roster weren’t signed by the Huskies out of high school.

Penix is one of six transfer portal players on Washington’s two-deep offensive roster offense.  That’s just over 27-percent.

Receiver Ja’Lynn Polk and running back Dillon Johnson are the other offensive starters from the portal.  Polk came to Washington from Texas Tech in 2021, while Johnson joined the Huskies this past Spring.

Backing up Polk is Michigan State transfer, Germie Bernard, while Will Nixon a Nebraska transfer will backup Johnson Saturday against Boise State.

Defensively, UW’s only starter from the Transfer Portal is junior cornerback Jabbar Mohammad.  Three other transfers are in the two-deep rotations.

Mohammad played for Oklahoma State last season.  His backup will be Long Beach City College transfer sophomore Thaddeus Dixon.

Senior edge defender Sakai Asoau-Afoa played at the College of San Mateo last year has locked down the backup position to All-American Bralen Trice.  Originally from Fife, Washington, the Huskies signed him this past off season.  He beat out sophomore Maurice Heims.

Former USC linebacker Ralen Goforth, was unable to beat out incumbent Alphonzo Tuputala for one linebacker position.

Returning kicks for Washington are Bernard and Arizona State transfer Daniyel Ngata.

In all, nearly a quarter of Washington’s two-deep roster that will face Boise State weren’t singed by UW out of high school.  Digging deeper, just 18-percent of Washington’s reconstructed defense went on it’s roster last season.  On the offense, and special teams, some major contributors transferred from other schools.
