Make no mistake about it, new Washington Husky football director of player personnel, Courtney Morgan has delivered, flipping Texas A&M commit Anthony James to Washington. A defensive lineman product of Wylie East, northeast of Dallas, Texas, is a self-reported 6-5 and 250 pounds and runs a 4.69 40-yard dash.
The consensus 4-star prospect appeared to be a sold commit to the Aggies before Morgan began working his magic, getting him on campus on his own dime in early May. But it was when James decommitted from the Aggies on May 22 the Washington staff gave him the mind-blowing visit that turned the tide in the Husky’s favor.
After that unofficial visit, James told RealDawg.com that his relationship with Morgan, while Morgan was director of player personnel at Michigan, was instrumental to getting to Seattle for the visit in the first place.
“Courtney is an elite recruiter with a lot of strong, West Coast connections,” said DeBoer when Morgan was hired in December last year. “He’s been an integral part of building great recruiting classes everywhere he’s been. He has built his success on his dynamic personality. He builds strong relationships, and we’re very fortunate to be able to bring him to Washington.”
How big of an impact is James’ commitment?
“This is nearly as important of a flip as Budda Baker was when Chris Petersen was hired,” said RealDawg.com’s lead scout, Trevor Mueller. “However, this was probably twice as difficult as Baker grew up across the lake from Husky Stadium and James grew up deep in the heart of Texas.”
Morgan was able to fend off late suitors in Auburn and Utah who James visited recently.
Mueller said that James’ “explosive movements make him one of the top defensive linemen in his class. He gets to the ball quickly and hits hard. He will see playing time early and projects to be an NFL prospect.”
Not a bad opening act for Morgan, but restless Husky fans will look for more to “Woof” about from local players this big recruiting weekend.
