Scott Huff spoke with the media today and addressed several topics, but clarified where things stand with the Husky O-line heading into 2020 depth-wise.
Huff spoke at length about the center position, stating that Luke Wattenberg appears to be the top Dawg, but also including Matteo Mele, Cole Norgaard, Myles Murao, Will Pliska, and Geirean Hatchett.
At left tackle, the coach listed Jaxson Kirkland, Nate Kalepo, Corey Luciano, Victor Curne, and Julius Buelow.
He talked about running the same schemes, “Inside, outside, zone, power without pull, some fullback stuff”, and indicated that the center/quarterback camaraderie is important, but this is all still being sorted out.
As for Wattenberg seeming to lead the way for the center position, he’s already been at left tackle, left guard, and (like Coleman Shelton before him) could complete his college at center with ease.
“You want your best guy at center”, Huff said, “He fits that bill; body-type-wise, leadership-wise, and athletically he could excel at that position.”
Another guy Huff sounded excited about is Kirkland, “I’m a huge believer in his dude”, Huff said.
On other subjects, Huff said that, while he doesn’t know what the percentage was last season for allowed sacks, but that ideally they would prefer to see no more than two per game.
On recruiting, Huff said that right now it’s hard to “move the needle” due to the fact that recruits cannot be on campus or taking unofficial trips, and the coaches can’t go on the road to evaluate and recruit either.
One reporter asked about John Donovan as a recruiter, and Huff said he’s a real personable guy, and as a coach he’s an “awesome guy…intelligent football coach.”
We are talking to Donovan tomorrow and Huff simply told us, “You guys will see”.
As for dealing with the long-distance aspect of preparing his guys for the draft and even recruiting, Huff said “It is what it is”.
Next up will be John Donovan tomorrow.
