Husky Football Notebook: 10/16

Call in and talk to Coach Pete, show up at Husky Stadium and get some tidbits from the assistant coaches and players. Either way, here’s a rundown of the days’ info.

** This morning Petersen spoke on the Pac-12 Coaches Teleconference and touched on a couple of item; first of which was the upcoming game against Colorado:

“We know those guys pretty well and the job that coach MacIntyre does”, Petersen said, “They’re impressive. They play hard. They have good players. They don’t flinch. They had a loss; that won’t bother them. They’ll just come back hungrier than ever. … Steven Montez is playing very well and he has explosive players around him.”

** Another subject that came up was the status of sophomore tight end, Jacob Kizer — who hasn’t seen much action this season (but had played in 19 of 20 games in his career), “He’s doing fine”, Petersen explained, “We used him last year as a true freshman, getting his feet wet. He’s working hard, progressing,” Petersen said. “He’s the next guy up if anything happens to the starters.”

** On the injury front — Jimmy Lake said today that cornerback Jordan Miller is good to go for Saturday. Miller had injured his leg on Saturday against the Ducks in Eugene and missed half the game, but he practiced today and all is well at this point.

** As Petersen said Monday, RS sophomore Quinten Pounds is lost for the season, and it’s not the first time. Pounds played just three games in 2015 because of injury, and then came back strong and played in all 14 games during the 2016 season, but 2017 saw him play just eight games before going down to injury again. Now, his knee issue is once again got him on the sidelines for the remainder of 2018.

** Some fans have questioned whether or not Petersen will burn redshirts for guys like Austin Osborne and Marquis Spiker — it’s our feeling that this won’t happen at this point. They still have some depth here with Alex Cook, Ty Jones, Aaron Fuller, Chico McClatcher, Andre Baccellia, Jordan Chin, Terrell Bynum, etc. So this is something worth keeping an eye on, but there’s been no word about any redshirts being burned yet where the receivers are concerned.

** On the freshman defensive front, Tuli Letuligasenoa has already played in one game; North Dakota, and Zion Tupuola-Fetui has played in one game, but this weekend will likely see Sam Taimani get into action as well. Kyler Gordon played on Saturday against Oregon so he has one game in, so does MJ Tafisi (against North Dakota).

** The Huskies, who fell to #15 in this week’s polls after the loss to Oregon, can redeem themselves in the race for the North (in terms of conference wins), as Oregon goes to Washington State (who had a bye last weekend) without starting left tackle, Peni Sewell. Sewell went out hurt against Washington last weekend and the Oregon coaches taped up his ankle and put him back in — so now he’s out for the remainder of the season.

** Washington opens as a 15-point favorite against Colorado, who lost to USC last weekend on the road. Colorado is suffering the injury bug as well, with receiver Jay McIntyre on concussion protocol, and standout  Laviska Shenault Jr. injured his toe against USC and under evaluation. Meanwhile, Buff DL Jase Franke suffered a season-ending injury to his knee against USC, and the senior — according to McIntyre — was having his best season.
