Huskies Win First Road Test over BYU, 45-19

The Huskies went on the road for the first time in 2019 and inked their third win for the season, defeating BYU by a score of 45-19.

Jacob Eason threw for 290 yards and Sean McGrew rushed for 103 in a game that had its ups and downs offensively, but the Husky defense got on the scoreboard with a scoop-and-score in the first quarter to start, what turned into, a route over the Cougars.

The Huskies now sit at 3-1 overall for the season, and BYU moves to 2-2.

Washington got on the scoreboard on their first possession, driving 75 yards that resulted in a 17-yard pass to Richard Newton in the endzone.

BYU would get on the board with a field-goal, but the Huskies continued to flex their muscles offensively when Eason found Aaron Fuller for another 17-yard pass that gave the Huskies a 14-3 lead with just over three minutes left in the quarter.

BYU drove down again and quarterback Zach Wilson coughed up the ball during a sack by Ryan Bowman, resulting in a loose ball and a touchdown by the Huskies.

BYU continued to battle back, with Wilson continuing to find receiver Matt Bushman, but by halftime they were still trailing 24-12.

The Cougars received to begin the second half, but a turnover gave the ball back to Washington and Eason threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Andre Baccellia to put the Huskies up 31-12.

Washington would score again on a punt return by Aaron Fuller for 88 yards to the house and the route was on. Richard Newton would go on to score again on short yardage and the Huskies led 45-12 nearing the end of the third quarter.

BYU scored once more with just one second left in the third, but the Huskies held on to finish the game with the score still at 45-12.

Newton tacked on 80 yards, and the Huskies recorded 180 rushing yards despite missing Salvon Ahmed who didn’t make the trip because of a leftover lower leg injury suffered against Hawai’i last week.

“The running backs did a great job stepping up and making plays”, Eason said following the game.

Eason and the offense put up 470 yards of total offense.

NOTES:

** Joe Tryon was ejected for a controversial targeting call, and will miss the first half against USC next weekend.

** Asa Turner made his debut in style, picking off a late fourth-quarter pass from Wilson and putting the ball back into the Huskies’ hands to run out the clock.

** Ahmed’s status is unknown but Petersen said before the game that this is not a long-term injury.
