Huskies make the cut for 4-star DT Jamaal Jarrett

Director of player personnel Courtney Morgan wants to expand Washington’s recruiting to a national level. It’s not going to be easy, but in order to take this program to the next level, it’s a step that needs to happen. Chris Petersen was able to start making end roads in Texas during his time as head coach, but there’s still more that can be done on a national level.

Morgan has extended offers to talented high school players from every corner of the country, and while it’s a top 11, Washington has made their first “short list” with a national prospect. Four-star defensive tackle Jamaal Jarrett out of Grimsley High in North Carolina has included Washington in his top 11, and he would be an excellent prospect for defensive line coach Inoke Breckterfield.

Jarrett holds an impressive offer list, including Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, and Michigan. Pulling a recruit out of North Carolina is going to be a difficult task, as Mack Brown has done an excellent job keeping the best players in the state at home, and any school would surely love to have him in the middle of its defense.

Measuring in at 6’5, 330 pounds, Jarrett is an incredible athlete for his size. His film might remind a lot of Husky fans of Greg Gaines. He’s able to collapse the pocket from the interior as a pass rusher, as well as being big and athletic enough to plug both A gaps in the run game. At his size, his natural power will play well at the college level, and if he can develop a solid pass rush move or two, he’s going to be a dominant force.

The class of 2023 is vital for Kalen DeBoer and his staff, it’s going to set the tone in so many ways for his future as head coach. Building a fence around Washington is priority one, but priority two should be landing a few commitments from players from around the country. High three-star/low four-star players like Jarrett are a great place to start, because if they come in and have success, it’ll be much easier for the staff to continue going back to those states, and hopefully have them become pipelines for Washington. National branding is key for the Huskies, and landing the commitment of Jarrett, and other players of his caliber will go a long way towards establishing that brand.
