Huskies Make it Close, but Can’t Finish against Nittany Lions

The Huskies made a valiant effort in the second half, but that effort still fell short as they lost to the Penn State Nittany Lions in the Fiesta Bowl by a score of 35-28.

The stat column looks lopsided, but Washington still only lost by seven points in a game that saw them struggle on both sides of the line and give up a big touchdown run to Penn State star running back, Saquan Barkley.

Penn State got up on the Huskies 14-0 early, and never looked back.

Washington would grab three turnovers, with points off of one for the game.

Myles Gaskin rushed for 98 yards despite a minus-yards situation earlier in the game, and Jake Browning passed for 151 yards, but spent most of the day running for his life.

Gaskin, however, was extremely effective in the wildcat — the one offensive play that PSU seemed to have no answer for.

Barkley rushed for 137 yards and two touchdowns, while quarterback Chase McSorley had a huge day; 342 passing yards and two touchdown passes.

The game did get a little wobbly towards the end though, when a missed field goal put the ball back into the Huskies’ hands with just over 30 seconds left. Washington tried a trick play with just five seconds left and Dante Pettis tried to throw a lateral to Myles Gaskin, but instead threw it right into the hands of a Penn State defender.

Game over.

Washington finishes the season at 10-3, but added their name to a list of upper-tier Pac-12 teams who fell the their opponents this bowl season.

Washington State, USC, ASU, Arizona, Stanford, and Oregon all came out losers in the post-season. The only team to win their bowl game was Utah.
