Huskies Grind Out Road Win in Corvallis, 19-7

The Huskies became bowl eligible when they went into Corvallis and defeated the Oregon State Beavers by a score of 19-7.

The way the defense played, it could have been 100-7, but the Husky offense struggled with dropped passes, turnovers, and just failed to capitalize on the many chances they had in the redzone.

Groza award semi-finalist, Peyton Henry also had a tough evening; missing two field goals (the first this season).

It isn’t like the Huskies were sleep-walking either, it’s just that the passing game was ineffective and Jacob Eason’s big cannon of an arm was working against him on this night.

The stars of the night were the Husky defensive line. They were stout, holding an offense that averages over 33 points per game to just 119 yards of total offense.

Washington’s offense, despite its issues, still generated 420 total yards — while Salvon Ahmed set his own personal record with 174 yards rushing with two touchdowns.

Oregon State’s only touchdown came when Jaydon Grant intercepted Eason and took the ball 36 yards for six.

Key Take-Aways:

Washington’s offensive line played a solid game. Jacob Eason’s lapses are more about Jacob Eason. Right now he still needs to take some velocity off the ball (on shorter throws). The last two picks he threw came when he stared down his receivers, and needs to go to his first or second of third progression. He still has a lot to do to become the quarterback he wants to become.

It’s not always just Eason. Sometimes these receivers just drop balls they should catch. Eason has so much potential that another year would really help him to settle in and become a first-rounder next year.

Joe Fricken Tryon Baby…this guy is playing violent football. But clean football too. Tryon is coming on more and more as the home stretch of the season looms near. The Husky defense played exceptional and sniffed out just about everything Oregon State tried to run.

Long balls too soon? Jacob Eason needs time to get into a rhythm and I’m not sold on throwing long-balls so early in the game. I’m not coordinator but would love to see more attention paid to his shorter passes where he can learn to harness that velocity on his throws, while also not going for it all so early in the game. Sometimes quarterbacks need to work up to that.

Richard Newton back…The Newt is back, and he posted 54 yards in his come back. Newton was playing tough but also looked to be a little guarded and pushing it too hard. But this kid is the real deal.

Ty Jones sighting…Jones is also back on the field, and with the additional bye-week these guys will have more time to get fresh before the last two games of the season.

Oregon State has a good secondary…The Beavers are going to get better under Jonathan Smith. They played with a little more attitude and aggression. It’s good to see Smith getting his alma mater back on track.
