Huskies get trounced by Hokies

Around 17 hours after losing a hard fought game against Providence, the Huskies were in anything but a close game against Virginia Tech Friday. The Huskies were boat raced by Virginia Tech, 103-79, at Madison Square Garden

It was definitely a harsh reality check for a Washington team that started out 2-0, after home wins against Belmont and Eastern Washington. Washington drops to 2-2 on the season, while Virginia Tech improves to 3-1.

The Hokies needed only the first 20 minutes of the game to virtually end the game. V-Tech quickly, jumped out to a 21-10 lead after making 5-of-6 three-pointers. That trend continued the entire first half, as the Huskies had a hard time identifying shooters. Virginia Tech ended the half, making 11-of-14 three-pointers, and had a 59-28 lead. Meanwhile, UW shot just 10-37 from the field and 1-7 from 3-point range at the half.

By the final whistle, the Huskies allowed the Hokies to shoot 58.8 percent (30-51) from the field and 68.2 percent (15-22) from 3-point range. For the second consecutive night, the Huskies struggled shooting the ball, shooting just 42.9 percent (27-63) from the field and 27.8 percent (5-18) from 3-point range.

Virginia Tech was led by Justin Bibbs’ 30 points. Ahmed hill added 23 points, making 6-6, 3-point attempts. Nickeil Alexander-Walker scored 20 points.

The Huskies were led by true freshman Jaylen Nowell, who scored 21 points. Nahziah Carter added 11 points. Former walk-on, Dan Kingma scored 10 points.

Dan Kingma, a former walk-on guard for the Huskies, on his birthday, came off the bench and hit two 3-pointers that sparked a 10-0 run. One of the few positives in UW’s loss.

Washington next faces Seattle University on November, 24th.
